PERFORMANCE STYLES

Tap Icon

TAP

make music with your feet

Tap is characterized by using Tap shoes to create a beat of their own when struck against the floor. Our upbeat Tap pieces are music-driven and designed to challenge and inspire our students. By incorporating several styles of Tap techniques including Hoofing, Classical, Broadway, and Rhythm Tap into our routines, our Tap dancers are well versed in every aspect of the art.

Jazz Icon

JAZZ

style meets skill

By definition, Jazz dance is a form of dance that combines both African and European dance styles; the high-energy style has a liveliness that sets it apart from more traditional forms of dance. Our Jazz pieces combine classic techniques with commercial dance style to create a well-rounded and engaging performance!

Hip Hop Icon

HIP HOP

from street to studio

Hip Hop dance is an umbrella term for a street dance form that evolved from Hip Hop music and culture. In our Hip Hop pieces, dancers will execute the basic techniques of the following sub-styles of Hip Hop: Break Dancing, Popping and Locking, and House. Dancers have fun performing this upbeat, diverse, and popular style of dance!

Acrobatics Icon

ACROBATICS

more than flips and tricks

We are proud to be an Acrobatics Arts affiliated studio! Our three levels (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) are divided by ability. In addition to cardio, which is done at the beginning of every class, each Acro rehearsal includes stretching, strengthening, balancing, limbering, and tumbling.

Musical Theater Icon

MUSICAL THEATER

that’s showbiz

Musical Theater dancing is rooted in the diverse history of Broadway musicals. Students in our Musical Theater pieces will incorporate acting and character work into an entertaining choreographed routine while learning the background of past and present Broadway shows in their rehearsals.

Contemporary Icon

CONTEMPORARY

dance your heart out

Contemporary dance includes a fusion of Ballet and Modern techniques. Focusing on the contract and release of the body and the unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction, Contemporary dancers express emotion through stylized movement and breath.

COMPETITION TEAM FAQ

  • HOW DO YOU JOIN THE COMPETITION TEAM?
All students interested in joining our company must audition during the summer prior to the competition season. You only need to audition for the styles of dance you’d like to be considered for. You will receive a permission slip where you will indicate the style(s), number of dances, and number of hours per week that you are able to spend in practice during the season. Anyone interested should attend the informational meeting held before the audition to learn more.
  • WHAT IS REQUIRED TO JOIN THE COMPETITION TEAM?
Full-time company members pay a standardized monthly tuition rate. Competition fees, costume payments, travel expenses, and additional fees are not included in monthly tuition. Most importantly, prospective members must be committed team players who love to dance and are consistently willing to work hard. Attendance and dedication are crucial to a successful team.
  • HOW MANY COMPETITIONS DO YOU TYPICALLY ATTEND DURING THE SEASON?
We attend 3–5 regional competitions per year, which includes 1 dance convention, and occasionally attend a national competition at the end of the season. We travel for regional competitions within a 3 hour radius. National competitions may require more travel time depending on available competition locations.
  • HOW MUCH OF A TIME COMMITMENT IS JOINING THE COMPETITION TEAM?
Company members can anticipate spending 3–12 hours in the studio per week, depending on their type of membership and number of dances. The more numbers you are in, the more rehearsals and classes you will need to attend.
  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME MEMBERS?
In addition to dance rehearsals, all full-time company dancers are required to take the company’s Ballet, Jazz, and Tap technique classes. If a technique class is not offered for a style/genre of a dance that you’re competing in, it is strongly recommended for you to take the recreational class of that style (i.e. Hip Hop, Acro, and Musical Theater). In addition to their 1 weekly company dance rehearsal, all part-time company dancers are required to take 1 recreational Ballet class and 1 recreational Jazz class. They are also welcome to take more recreational classes including Tap, Acro, Musical Theater, Contemporary, and/or Hip Hop. Unlike full-time company members who pay a standard monthly rate, part-time members follow our recreational tuition scale. Please reference our student handbook for exact pricing.
